How to Build a Raised Bed
Whilst they have been around for many years raised beds are the in thing this season, with many gardeners old and new now using them and I will discuss how to build one for as little money as possible.
The benefits of raised beds are:
1.) The soil heats up earlier in season and stays warmer for longer at the end of the season, thus extending the overall growing window.
2.) Raised beds can be accessed from all sides, thus eliminating the need to constantly have to avoid treading on crops or seedlings. Commonly raised beds are 6 inches high and 1.2 metres wide and 2.4 metres long. This ease of access also save our poor backs after a long day on the vegetable plot.
3.) They can also be built in high levels thus making them ideal for those gardeners with limited mobility. Higher raised beds enabling gardening from a seat or wheelchair.
What you will need to build a raised bed?
1.) Four old scaffolding planks are ideal for building raised beds, scaffolding companies often have old planks available for free if you are prepared to collect them. You want enough for 2 pieces 1.2 metres long and for 2 pieces 2.4 metres long.
2.) Enough 2 x 2 inch timber to make six 1 foot long stakes.
3.) Small tub of creosote
4.) Large paintbrush
5.) 20 decking screws.
6.) One handsaw or ideally circular saw (plus extension lead).
7.) Electric drill and 4 mm drill bit and a countersink.
8.) Saw bench or chair to rest the wood on.
9.) Tape measure.
10.) Pencil.
11.) Straight edge.
12.) Large hammer.
13.) Cordless screwdriver
14.) Old Newspaper
15.) Watering Can
Instructions.
1.) Rest one of the scaffolding boards on your chair or saw table, measure out 1.2 metres from one end and using your straight edge and pencil mark a line out at 90 degrees to the edge of the board.
2.) Using your handsaw or circular saw (Always take care with circular saws and wear appropriate safety gear) cut across the line.
3.) Repeat steps 1 & 2 above for the second plank.
4.) Now measure out a 2.4 metre length of board and using your straight edge and pencil mark a line at 90 degrees to the edge of the board. Then repeat step 2 above.
5.) Repeat step 4 for the second 2.4 metre board
6.) Now using your electric drill and 4mm drill bit, drill two holes 4-5 cm in from the edge of the end of each 1.2 metre long planks, approximately 4 inches apart. This should leave you with four holes drilled in each plank. Do the same with the 2.4 metre long planks. But also drill 2 more holes in the centre of the 2.4 metre long planks again about 4 inches apart.
7.) Paint the planks on both sides and then ends and put your feet up and have a cup of tea whilst they dry.
8.) Take the 2 x 2 timber and cut it into six 1 ft lengths.
9.) Take 2.4 metre long planks and place one of the timbers from 8. Above and using the decking screws fasten the 2.4 metre plank to the 1 ft lengths of 2 x2 timber. Do the same with the other 2.4 metre plank.
10.) Now using the hammer tap the 2 x 2 inch timbers attached to the first 2.4 metre long plank into the ground where you want your raised bed to be. (I recommend digging the earth around where the wood is to be hammered in first to loosen it)
11.) Now measure 1.2 metres away from the plank you just hammered in and do the same with the second 2.4 metre plank, making sure it is parallel with the first one.
12.) Now take the 1.2 metre planks and using the predrilled holes and decking screws fasten them to the 2 x 2 inch stakes at the end of each 2.4 metre long plank. Your raised bed is now ready.
13.) Now take the old newspaper and put it down in overlapping sheets in the bottom of the raised bed, then using the watering can wet it all down, allow it to dry. It should dry as one big sheet protecting the bottom of your raised bed.
14.) Add layers of compost and soil alternately to the bed.
Your raised bed is now ready.

How to Build Coffee Tables That Last a Lifetime
Every DIYer in the world has probably attempted a coffee table at one time in their life. Sometimes, this is known as the turning point in many DIYer careers. You may be wondering why I would say such a thing, but the answer is an obvious reason. If you can withstand the time, effort, frustration, and money that goes into creating a coffee table, you are indeed a king among the DIYers and deserve all the privileges that title has to offer. When I want to know how to build coffee tables for my home, I did a search on the Internet until I found a pattern that suited me.
You can find your pattern anyway you choose, but I suggest you do a search via the Internet. You can get a lot of those free patterns and sometimes, you can find inexpensive ones as well. I never pay for such patterns, but I have found a lot of them on the Internet. You can usually print them out and this is what I suggest. You may choose to run back and forth to and from your computer desk looking at what to do next, but it is a lot easier to have the instructions close by. In addition, it is nice to have a hard copy so that you can mark on the instructions as you continue your work.
The first thing you need to do is read those instructions thoroughly. There is really no use in continuing with those instructions if you can not do one of the steps. Believe me, if you do not know how to do a step, figuring it out in the middle of your project is probably not the best time to pick up that new technique. You can find simple instructions for how to build coffee tables if you look around. Do not take on a task that is beyond your own capabilities.
First, you should take notice of the materials needed for your coffee table. Do you know what the materials are? If you do, you can go to your local hardware store or home improvement center and purchase the materials needed to complete your own coffee tables.
1. Legs: I suggest 4 legs at about 14 inches in length. I like using a 2 by 2 for my use but you can use thicker if you take into account the other options.
2. Table Top: I am using one that is 2.5 feet by 4 feet and 2 inches thick for this example. You can use any type of wood, but remember that the better the quality, the better and longer life of your coffee table.
3. Coach Bolts: I suggest using 6-inch bolts with the additional wingnuts and washer necessary for added security and strength.
4. Wood Screws: I used 30 at 1.5 inches in length and 16 at 2.6 inches in length. These are important!
5. Corner Supports: I used 6 inch board cut at a 45 degree angle at both ends.
6. Top Rail: This is an important part of any coffee table. You should have two or these at about 39 inches long and 2 at 18 inches long.
7. Glue: Okay, this may seem silly but nothing is more handy than wood glue at this point. You should get a bottle or two for use when you are trying to build your own coffee table.
I suggest you get wood a little bit longer and cut it yourself with tools at home. This way you are getting the best quality at the best price and insuring that you are getting it done your way. You should already have proper cutting tools, hammers, screwdrivers, and power tools for this project. I hope that you will not find yourself stuck in the middle of the project going, "What do I do now?" Following these instructions will of course stop that from happening.
Now that you have all the wood and pieces together, you should get a piece of tarp or an old sheet. Place the top of your coffee table face down onto that sheet or tarp. This will add a layer of protection to the coffee top. You want to add the rails to the table top. Of course, you will add the smaller pieces to the smaller ends and the larger pieces to the longer ends. The ends should meet cattycorner but should barely touch. You should glue the fillets onto the inside of the edge between the rails and the table. Then, you should use wood screws to finish this step. Make sure that all ends are evenly spaced or you will have a cockeyed coffee table when you are finished.
Adding the corner supports is a simple step at this point. The angled pieces should fit perfectly into each corner of the coffee table. Then I chisel off a small piece of each leg to fit on the outside of the railings and facing the fillets. Use one of those coach bolts on each leg attaching it through to the corner supports. I like using lots of glue at every step so make sure not to skimp on the glue now. You will make your coffee table stronger if you have a lot of that glue.

1. Legs: I suggest 4 legs at about 14 inches in length. I like using a 2 by 2 for my use but you can use thicker if you take into account the other options.
2. Table Top: I am using one that is 2.5 feet by 4 feet and 2 inches thick for this example. You can use any type of wood, but remember that the better the quality, the better and longer life of your coffee table.
3. Coach Bolts: I suggest using 6-inch bolts with the additional wingnuts and washer necessary for added security and strength.
4. Wood Screws: I used 30 at 1.5 inches in length and 16 at 2.6 inches in length. These are important!
5. Corner Supports: I used 6 inch board cut at a 45 degree angle at both ends.
6. Top Rail: This is an important part of any coffee table. You should have two or these at about 39 inches long and 2 at 18 inches long.
7. Glue: Okay, this may seem silly but nothing is more handy than wood glue at this point. You should get a bottle or two for use when you are trying to build your own coffee table.
I suggest you get wood a little bit longer and cut it yourself with tools at home. This way you are getting the best quality at the best price and insuring that you are getting it done your way. You should already have proper cutting tools, hammers, screwdrivers, and power tools for this project. I hope that you will not find yourself stuck in the middle of the project going, "What do I do now?" Following these instructions will of course stop that from happening.
Now that you have all the wood and pieces together, you should get a piece of tarp or an old sheet. Place the top of your coffee table face down onto that sheet or tarp. This will add a layer of protection to the coffee top. You want to add the rails to the table top. Of course, you will add the smaller pieces to the smaller ends and the larger pieces to the longer ends. The ends should meet cattycorner but should barely touch. You should glue the fillets onto the inside of the edge between the rails and the table. Then, you should use wood screws to finish this step. Make sure that all ends are evenly spaced or you will have a cockeyed coffee table when you are finished.
Adding the corner supports is a simple step at this point. The angled pieces should fit perfectly into each corner of the coffee table. Then I chisel off a small piece of each leg to fit on the outside of the railings and facing the fillets. Use one of those coach bolts on each leg attaching it through to the corner supports. I like using lots of glue at every step so make sure not to skimp on the glue now. You will make your coffee table stronger if you have a lot of that glue.

How to Build Stairs
When you're planning your staircase, you need to think of it this way, "I have a certain height to reach from the bottom floor to the top floor and I only have just so much length to do it."
When you measure the height from the bottom floor to the top, make sure you include the second floor joists, subfloor, and flooring material. Take the total height in inches.
Now here's where the formula comes in. Take the total height that you just measured from bottom to top floor. Divide that number by 7. For example, if the total height is 108-inches, then the answer would be 15.428. Don't worry about the numbers after the decimal.
This tells us that there will be 15 risers used in the staircase. Risers are the vertical part of the stairway. Now we need to know eactly how high to cut each riser so that we have even steps all the way to the top floor. We get this number when we divide the floor height in inches (108) by 15. This gives us 7.2 which on a tape measure is about 7 3/16-inches.
Now the second part of the stairs is the tread or the horizontal step. This is usually around 10-inches deep. The number of treads will be one less than the number of risers. In this case there will be 14 treads. To find out how long our staircase will be we need to multiply the tread length which is 10-inches, by the number of treads which is 14. This tells us the staircase will be exactly 140-inches long.
The third part of the stairs is the stringer. This is a board that you cut the steps into and it extends to the top floor. This is usually a good quality 2x12 free of knots. Lay the board flat on the floor. Start from the bottom of the board and measure up to the height of the first riser which is 7 3/16-inches. From that point lay a carpenter's square on the board and make sure the inside of the square measures 10-inches over and 7 3/16-inches up. Mark the steps with a pencil. Continue until you reach the top of the board.
This board can be cut with a skilsaw and a reciprocating saw to get into the corners.
You will need at least two more stringers to make a strong stairway. Use the stringer you just made as a template for the other stringers. Once that's finished, you will need to saw the bottom off the stringers at an angle that matches the slope of the stringers starting from the length of the stairs on the floor(140-inches) to the top of the second floor.
Secure the stringers in place with joist hangers and then put all the treads in place. The risers can be put on later or not at all if you want open stairs.
